Carlos Alcaraz's heroics at the Laver Cup 2024 helped Team Europe claim the title after a two-year wait. He won't have a lot of time to soak in the glory of his triumph as he will make the long journey to Beijing for the China Open, which will begin on September 26.
This will be Alcaraz's second appearance at the China Open, an ATP 500 event. He made the semifinals there last year on his debut and lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
The Spaniard now appears to have regained his lost mojo, which resulted in a shock second-round exit from the US Open. He was aiming to capture his third straight Major title on the trot but was ousted by Botic van de Zandschulp in one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.
However, Alcaraz has turned things around rather quickly. He was on Davis Cup duty immediately after the US Open and won both of his singles matches along with his only doubles match.
The 21-year-old then headed to Berlin for his Laver Cup debut. His campaign wasn't off to a great start, as he lost his very first match, a doubles tie alongside Alexander Zverev, in straight sets. However, he kept Team Europe's hopes of a title alive with his win over Ben Shelton, the only match won by his team on the second day.
Alcaraz teamed up with Casper Ruud to begin the third day with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. He then took on Taylor Fritz in a showdown for the title and won the match 6-2, 7-5 to seal Team Europe's victory.
Carlos Alcaraz to participate in the Shanghai Masters after the China Open
Carlos Alcaraz's trip to China isn't limited to the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing. Following the conclusion of the tournament, he will participate in the Shanghai Masters.
Alcaraz made his Shanghai Masters debut last year. He secured straight-set wins over Gregoire Barrere and Dan Evans to reach the fourth round. He took on Grigor Dimitrov for a spot in the quarterfinals and even led him by a set but lost the match in three sets.
Alcaraz is now on a four-match winning streak after his earlier-than-expected elimination from the US Open. He will now aim to capitalize on this momentum and finally capture his first title on Asian soil in the coming weeks.
