Carlos Alcaraz humorously compared his, Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner's respective golf swings in terms of their effectiveness. The Spaniard concluded by rating himself above his legendary compatriot and the Italian.
On Monday, January 13, Alcaraz kickstarted his 2025 Australian Open campaign in style, comprehensively defeating Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1. The four-time Major winner's post-match on-court interview was conducted by Australian former ATP star John Millman, who asked Alcaraz if he had played golf with Nadal.
In response, the World No. 3 said that while he has never played golf with Nadal, he has seen the now-retired Spaniard's swing.
"I never played with him but I saw his swing. I’m not gonna say anything," Alcaraz told Millman.
Here, John Millman asked Carlos Alcaraz to rank his golf swing in comparison to those of Rafael Nadal and reigning World No. 1 and defending Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner.
"I have to start with my swing. It’s pretty solid. But the ball is always right or left. Never in the center. Do you want me to rank based on effective swing or beautiful swing?" Alcaraz replied.
Millman went with effectiveness, and Alcaraz playfully rated himself higher than Nadal and Sinner.
"I’m sorry but I’ll put myself as the first one. Second Rafa. Third Jannik," Alcaraz said.
Ahead of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final, Alcaraz had hilariously downplayed his golfing skills.
"I love playing but I'm not too good" - Carlos Alcaraz on golfing abilities prior to Wimbledon 2024 final
Carlos Alcaraz set up a Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic for the second straight year in 2024. In the buildup to the match, he revealed that he would be playing golf to keep himself calm and relaxed before facing the 24-time Grand Slam champion. However, the Spaniard poked fun at himself over his golfing skill level.
"I'm so, so bad. Comparing to my tennis, I love playing golf, I'm not too good, just finding balls every time. I can't hit straight but it tells me a lot to turn off my mind a little bit, not think about tennis and relax a little bit. Tomorrow, there is a huge percentage that I'm gonna play golf just to calm myself and yeah, I must say that I love playing but I'm not too good," Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz would go on to register a dominant win over Djokovic in the Wimbledon final to capture his fourth Major crown. At the 2025 Australian Open, the Spaniard is set to lock horns with Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.
