Carlos Alcaraz has revealed his idea to get a kangaroo tattoo if he wins the Australian Open 2025 title, but clarified that he has no plans to emulate Jim Courier and jump into the Yarra River.
Alcaraz, the third seed in Melbourne, got the better of Nuno Borges, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 in the third round on Friday.
Former Austrian tennis player Barbara Schett, an expert with Eurosport, caught up with Alcaraz after his match and had an interesting question for him:
“We heard on the court interview that the next tattoo is going to be a kangaroo, but my question is will you jump into the Yarra River? Because there’s been one crazy guy in 1993. A guy called Jim Courier, who has done that. So he went to the river and jumped in there once he won the trophy. Are you going to do that?” she asked.
Carlos Alcaraz, with a hearty laugh, said he has no plans to jump into the river but would stick to getting the tattoo.
“I think I’m going to let him do that crazy thing. I think the tattoo is more than enough for me. I think at that time (in 1993) the people were a little bit crazier I guess. But I'm not going to do that, no.”
Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, will next face 15th seed Jack Draper in the fourth round on Sunday, January 19.
Carlos Alcaraz and his love for tattoos
Carlos Alcaraz has a fascination for tattoos and follows a tradition of getting inked to commemorate each Grand Slam he has won. He has tattoos of the date he won the 2022 US Open title, a strawberry for his two Wimbledon crowns and the Eiffel Tower for his 2024 French Open win.
During his on-court interview, Alcaraz was asked what tattoo he would he get if he were to win the Australian Open 2025.
“It’s a kangaroo, that’s for sure. It’s going to be a kangaroo, that’s my idea,” said Carlos Alcaraz, much to the joy of the packed stadium.
The Melbourne major is the only Grand Slam missing from the Spaniard’s impressive trophy cabinet. If he were to win, Alcaraz would become the youngest men’s player in tennis history to complete a Career Grand Slam - a feat that is achieved when a player wins all four Grand Slams in their career.
