Carlos Alcaraz has endorsed Novak Djokovic's view about the Serb's supremacy when he is at his best. Alcaraz also expressed his wish to face the best version of Djokovic in the future.
The top two players in the world have squared off against each other only once so far. In the semifinals of the 2022 Madrid Open, Alcaraz rallied from a set down to beat Djokovic 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5).
Djokovic, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, has not been able to participate in numerous tournaments due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19. The 19-year-old, on the other hand, missed the 2022 ATP Finals and the 2023 Australian Open due to injury.
Speaking to The National in February, Djokovic claimed to be the best player in the world when he was fit and in action.
"I know that when I’m ready, when I’m there out on the court, on any surface, against anybody, I’m better. I’m the best. And I don’t think there’s anything arrogant or pretentious about it," Djokovic said.
After Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul in the fourth round of the 2023 Miami Open, he was asked to comment on the Serb's statement. The top-ranked player remarked that he agreed with Djokovic and was looking forward to facing him in the future.
“I have played against Novak when he was at 100 percent. I would say in Madrid (last year) he played really, really well," Alcaraz said. "So it was close. I agree with him. When he’s 100 percent, probably he’s one of or the best player in the world."
"What Novak has achieved, the level of Novak, for example, in Australia was unbelievable and really high," he added. "As I said before, I really want to play against Novak when he’s 100% and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it. That’s all I can say right now.”
If he fails to defend his title in Miami, Carlos Alcaraz will lose his No. 1 ranking to Djokovic.
Carlos Alcaraz wishes to defeat Novak Djokovic and eventually become one of the best ever
Speaking to Eurosport recently, Carlos Alcaraz stated that he wanted to beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal and become one of the greatest players of all time.
"I want to beat Nadal and Djokovic, but I am not here to take any Grand Slams away from them or prevent either of them from being the best of all time. I am just trying to write my own history," Alcaraz said.
"I want to win Slams. I am ambitious and my goals are big, I'm not going to lie. My dream is to be one of the best in history, to try to get somehow close to them," he added.
While Alcaraz leads 1-0 head-to-head against the Serb, he has a 1-2 record against Nadal.
