Carlos Alcaraz sent a heartfelt message to Alexander Zverev after his decimating defeat to Jannik Sinner in the final of the 2025 Australian Open. This is the German's third loss in Grand Slam finals and his hunt for the elusive Major is not yet over.
The top two seeds of the Australian Open faced each other in the showpiece clash, however, no one in the tennis fraternity expected Sinner to crush Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 after two hours and 42 minutes to successfully defend his Melbourne crown and win his third Grand Slam title. As opposed to his previous nail-biters, the German had never been dealt with so comfortably in the finals.
The World No. 2 was absolutely heartbroken following his defeat and was consoled by Sinner, who gave him some words of comfort ahead of their trophy presentation. Carlos Alcaraz also sent the 27-year-old up an emotional message on Instagram where he told Zverev to stay courageous. The Spaniard was ousted in the quarterfinals by Novak Djokovic.
"Stay strong, Alexander Zverev! Your moment will come, I'm sure!"
The tennis fraternity was stunned by the one-sided nature of the final with many finding it not entertaining. Interestingly, Zverev's first Grand Slam final loss came at the 2020 US Open where the German lost to Dominic Thiem from two sets up 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, (6)6-7. His second Grand Slam final was at the 2024 French Open where he once again lost from an advantageous position 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 1-6, 2-6.
"I'm just not good enough, it's simple as that" - Alexander Zverev shoulders responsibility after Australian Open defeat
During his runner-up speech, Alexander Zverev shouldered the responsibility of his Grand Slam heartbreaks. However, he exhibited pride on his journey back to the upper echelons of tennis after the career-threatening ankle injury he suffered at the 2022 French Open against Rafael Nadal.
"My team, I mean, we're trying to do all the right work. I'm just not good enough. It's simple as that. But I really appreciate what everybody has done, over the last few years," he said.
"Back from my ankle injury to World No. 2, to play Grand Slam finals again. So, I really appreciate everything that they have done, and yeah I wouldn't be here without them," he added.
Alexander Zverev will continue his reign as the World No. 2 behind Jannik Sinner, who has achieved a plethora of milestones due to his Australian Open triumph.
