Carlos Alcaraz produced a thoroughly comprehensive display as he steamrolled his way past Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open. On his way out of the court after the conclusion of the match and his post-match on-court interview, the Spaniard turned cheeky as he hilariously reflected on the excellence of his serve throughout the encounter.
The first two sets finished 6-0, 6-1, in Carlos Alcaraz's favor, with Yoshihito Nishioka unable to find any holes at all in the World No. 3's game. While the Japanese did put up some resistance in the third set, it was too little too late, as the Spaniard confirmed his place in the third round of the Melbourne Major. Alcaraz later signed off by penning down the following question on the courtside camera.
"Am I a serve bot?"
Carlos Alcaraz fired 14 aces against Yoshihito Nishioka and only committed three double faults in the match. The Spaniard's win percentages on his first and second serves were both excellent at 89% and 81% respectively. The first-serve win percentage was a career-high for the four-time Major champion at Grand Slam level.
The use of the phrase "serve bot" has gained traction among online tennis fans. The phrase is mostly used in a derogatory manner, typically directed at players who, according to fans, tend to rely primarily on their serves to win matches.
During his post-match, on-court interview, Alcaraz laid bare his hunger to add the Australian Open title to his already-impressive haul of prestigious tennis honors.
"That's one of the reasons I want to win this tournament" - Carlos Alcaraz on Australian Open ambition
Carlos Alcaraz was asked about his thoughts on potentially completing the Career Grand Slam soon by winning the Australian Open, the only Major where the Spaniard hasn't tasted glory so far. His best finish Down Under came last year, when he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz is the youngest man to win Grand Slams across all three surfaces.
Here, the former World No. 1 said:
"That’s one of the reasons I want to win this tournament one day. To put my name on that short list. I’m working every day just to be ready for that time. Hopefully this year. Day by day. Let’s see how it’s gonna feel. Right now I’m thinking about the next round. Hopefully I’m gonna get farther."
Up next for Alcaraz at the 2025 Australian Open is a third-round clash against Nuno Borges, who was one of the surprise packages of last year's edition of the hardcourt Major.
