Third seed Carlos Alcaraz will take on fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships on Friday (July 12). The Spaniard leads the head-to-head against Medvedev 4-2 and defeated him most recently in the 2024 BNP Paribas Open.

Alcaraz is among the top three players on the men's tour this year. Apart from successfully defending his title at Indian Wells, he also clinched the 2024 French Open in Paris.

The 21-year-old began his campaign in London by cruising past Mark Lajal and Alexander Vukic in the first two rounds. He outmuscled three top 30 seeds en route to the semifinals: Frances Tiafoe, Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul. Alcaraz defeated the American Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. He is the defending champion at Wimbledon and two wins away from capturing his second Major crown in London.

Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, will feel gutted to have not added to his trophy cabinet this year. He secured runner-up finishes in Melbourne and Indian Wells and also reached the semifinals of the Miami Open where he was beaten by Jannik Sinner in straight sets.

The Russian was handed a tricky draw at the Wimbledon Championships this year. He edged past Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexandre Muller, Jan Lennard Struff and Grigor Dimitrov en route to the quarterfinals and then showed his class against Sinner in the last four. The Russian outlasted the top seed in a thrilling five-set bout, 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3.

Alcaraz and Medvedev also faced each other in the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships last year. The Spaniard eased past the Russian in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
