Casper Ruud recently switched to a different, more Norwegian outfit at the 2024 Paris Olympics in response to the controversy surrounding him donning a Danish-looking kit in his opening round.

Ruud is representing Norway at his first Olympic Games in Paris. Seeded sixth at the singles event, he is through to the third round, with victories over Japan’s Taro Daniel (7-5, 6-1) and Italy’s Andrea Vavassori (4-6, 6-4, 6-3). More than his campaign, though, it was his outfit that created a buzz online.

Casper Ruud, who is sponsored by Yonex, donned a deep red T-shirt with white stripes during his opening match, which many Norwegians considered strikingly similar to the Danish flag. Overall, the former World No. 2 did have a hint of navy blue (the primary distinction between the flags of Norway and Denmark), thanks to his shoes. However, it was still considered insufficient by the critics.

When asked about the blunder, Ruud, too, admitted to missing a “little more blue.”

"I would have liked to see a little more blue in it myself," Ruud told NRK.

Interestingly, other players wearing Yonex, including Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka and Belgium’s Zizou Berges, too sported similar kits.

"It is not me who designed it, and I just put up with what I get. But yes, I missed blue. Now I have a bit of blue on my shoes, and a Norwegian flag there. But it is very little," Casper Ruud said about the fiasco.

He also sought his fans and supporters’ opinion.

"Should we try to add a little blue to this outfit for tomorrow?" the former World No. 2 asked on X.

Ruud promptly swapped his outfit, flaunting navy blue on his T-shirt and shorts during his second-round match.

Casper Ruud is now gearing up for a clash against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The pair have met five times, with the latter leading 3-2 in the head-to-head.

Cerundolo is in exceptional form, having kicked off his campaign at Stade Roland-Garros just a day after clinching his third career title at the Croatia Open in Umag. The World No. 26 beat Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before edging out home favorite Ugo Hubert 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5 in the second round.

Despite Francisco Cerundolo’s inspired run, though, Casper Ruud would hope to count on his experience on the claycourts of Roland-Garros. The 25-year-old was the French Open runner-up in 2022 and 2023 and reached the semifinals in the latest edition.
