Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles event at China Open 2024. On Saturday, September 28, the duo lost in straight sets to Francisco Cerundolo and Nicolas Jarry on Court 5.
Cerundolo and Jarry took an hour and 31 minutes to beat Bopanna and Dodig 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). In the quarterfinal to be held on Sunday, September 29, they will be up against Britain’s Jamie Murray, the brother of the legendary Andy Murray, and Australia’s John Peers.
In the first round, Murray and Peers defeated the Brazilian pair of Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 12-10 in an hour and 53 minutes.
Rohan Bopanna, Ivan Dodig go down fighting
Bopanna and Dodig looked out of sorts in the opening game. They gave six breakpoint chances out of which their opponents converted only one. The Indo-Croatian duo had an opportunity to break as well, but failed to capitalize on the only chance they got.
But the second set was much tighter compared to the first. Bopanna and Dodig did not give Jarry and Cerundolo a single chance to break their serve. However, they would be gutted for not making use of the two break point opportunities that they got.
After somehow managing to force a tie-breaker in the second set, Bopanna and Dodig had a chance to take the match into the deciding set. But that did not happen as Cerundolo and Jarry held their nerves to close out the match comfortably.
The Argentine-Chilean pair stormed into a 2-1 lead from the word go and did not look back from there. At 6-4, they fetched two match points after which Bopanna and Dodig could not make a comeback.
The China Open was Bopanna’s first assignment on court after he crashed out of men’s doubles and mixed doubles earlier this month at the US Open.
