Chris Evert highlighted the stroke of bad luck that hit Bianca Andreescu as the Canadian suffered a terrible injury that put paid to her chances of progressing at the 2023 Miami Open. Evert felt Andreescu was approaching a high level of tennis again and playing very well in Miami before her campaign was cut short.

Andreescu fell awkwardly during a point in the second set of her fourth-round clash against Ekaterina Alexandrova on Tuesday, with the scoreline at 7-6(0), 0-2 in the latter's favor. She screamed in anguish soon after, calling it the worst pain she had felt. Teary eyed, Andreescu was then taken off the court in a wheelchair.

Reacting to the incident, Evert said it was quite unfortunate given Andreescu's form and wished the 22-year-old a quick recovery.

"This is so unfortunate. Bianca really getting her game back and playing so well…wishing her a speedy recovery!" Chris Evert wrote on Twitter.

The 2019 US Open champion beat two former Grand Slam champions and a Top-10 player in her first three matches in Miami, recording wins against Emma Raducanu, Maria Sakkari, and Sofia Kenin.

Andreescu will now wait to hear back on test results on her injured ankle, with the claycourt season set to begin soon after Miami.

Bianca Andreescu took to social media to share an update on her injury earlier on Tuesday, reiterating that she had never felt such pain before. The Canadian star went through a nervous period as she was still awaiting medical reports that would lay out the extent of her injury, saying that she hopes it is not serious.

"On a serious note tho… that was the worst pain I’ve ever felt… praying for nothing serious. Still waiting on official results. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind words, doesn’t go unnoticed," Andreescu wrote on Twitter.

Andreescu had a decent run during the 2022 claycourt swing, given that she started the season directly in April after missing almost six months of tennis due to another injury. She reached the fourth round of the Madrid Open and the quarterfinals of the Italian Open before a second-round loss to Belinda Bencic at the French Open.

Despite the unfortunate exit, the world No. 31 will gain some crucial ranking points at the end of the Miami Open.
