Christopher Eubanks' first-round exit to Lebanon's Benjamin Hassan in the opening round of men's singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics sparked discussion among fans. The American was stunned in straight sets in under an hour.
Eubanks entered Team USA's team due to Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, and Sebastian Korda's withdrawal from the prestigious event due to various reasons. Held at Roland-Garros, it is being played on clay, a surface that hasn't been the American's forte. He has never made it past the first round of the French Open; it has been his worst-performing Major.
However, he entered the once-in-a-four-year event in the men's singles and was pitted against World No. 170 Benjamin Hassan in the opening round. The Lebanese stunned the American 6-4, 6-2 in just 53 minutes to reach the second round.
Fans took to social media to react to Christopher Eubanks' defeat. A fan did admit that it was a huge win for Hassan, but stated that the American shouldn't have been at the Olympics.
“Huge! But to be fair Chris shouldn’t of been at the Olympics.”
Another fan said how the American wasn't a threat outside the grass.
“Eubanks outside of grass is so beatable by low ranked opponents,” a fan said.
Here are some other reactions from the fans criticizing the American.
“Eubankruptcy strikes again”, a fan joked.
“Great but Chris should’ve been nowhere near the Olympic team. I love Eubanks but he’s not worthy,” a fan opined.
“Any thoughts on fake tough guy Ben Shelton hiding? Can’t believe we had to send this clown to represent USA v Lebanon,” a fan called out.
“Even if Eubanks doesn’t ever reach the heights he did again, he still lived the absolute tennis dream for a bit. Hope he finds it again though,” a fan wished.

Christopher Eubanks had previously stated that he was grateful to get an opportunity to represent his nation at the Olympics. He wasn't sure if he would receive this opportunity due to the rise in American tennis talents in the last few years. So, he readily accepted the opportunity when it came his way.
“It's something I didn't really know would come my way, with how strong American men's tennis has been the past few years,” Eubanks said. (via NBC Olympics)
“So when I saw that there was a close chance to make the team, I was like, 'Oh, man, like I might actually get a chance to go to the Olympics.' So now I'm super excited about it. Can't wait to get over there and looking forward to it.”
Christopher Eubanks isn't a part of the men's doubles or the mixed doubles meaning that his Olympic journey has come to an end.
