2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff performed poorly against World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka during the semifinals of the 2024 Wuhan Open. The American set a record with 21 double faults during the match against the defending champion.

Gauff's disappointing serving performance led to her setting an unwanted record. The 21 double faults she committed yesterday at Centre Court were not only the most in a single match of her career but also the most by any WTA player in the main draw.

The 20-year-old did make a dominating start to the semifinal clash, defeating Sabalenka 6-1 in the first set, but couldn't capitalize on that owing to her poor serves and Aryna Sabalenka's error-free performance.

Gauff struggled with her serves throughout the match, allowing Sabalenka to grab the victory in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 4-6). The win allowed the latter to continue her unbeaten run in Wuhan and reach the finals, where she will face China's Qinwen Zheng.

Gauff faced a defeat after nine matches on the WTA tour. The youngster's last defeat came against Emma Navarro during the Round of 16 of the 2024 US Open.

Competing in her first tournament after the US Open disappointment, Coco Gauff stepped up big-time to win the 2024 China Open after a dominating victory against World No. 31 Karolina Muchova in the final.

Following impressive victories over Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng in earlier rounds, Gauff brushed aside Muchova rather easily. The American dominated the match, securing an eighth WTA title with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win over the Czech player.

Following her victory in the final, the 20-year-old heaped high praise on her opponent and also acknowledged the contributions of her new coach, Matt Daly. She said (via ESPN):

"I think you're (Karolina Muchova) such an amazing player, and you deserve everything, and hopefully you play many more finals. I would like to thank my team. Thank you, Matt, this is our first tournament together, and obviously, it's going well."

This was Gauff's second singles WTA title this year after the ASB Classic in New Zealand back in January.
