Coco Gauff has started the new season strong, winning all three of her singles matches to lead Team USA into the 2025 United Cup semifinals. After being ousted in the group stage last year, the 2023 champions have rediscovered their energy, with the 20-year-old star at the heart of their resurgence.
Gauff took to Instagram to share a celebratory post from the United Cup's official account. The image captured Gauff fist-pumping and Taylor Fritz mid-serve, with Team USA labeled as semifinalists. The 2024 WTA Finals champion added her own caption:
"Final 4."
A look at Coco Gauff and Team USA's performance at the United Cup 2025
Team USA began its campaign against Canada on Sunday, December 29. Coco Gauff defeated Leylah Fernandez before Taylor Fritz fell to Felix Auger-Aliassime to force a deciding mixed doubles match. The four competitors featured again and it was Gauff and Fritz who came out on top 7-6, 7-5.
The USA next faced Croatia on Tuesday, December 31. 20-year-old Gauff was clinical against another tough opponent, Paris Olympics silver medalist Donna Vekic. Fritz also opened his account in singles with a win over Borna Coric.
Later, Gauff and Fritz won in mixed doubles against Petra Marcinko and Ivan Dodig to complete a clean-sweep victory.
In the quarterfinals, Team USA took on China on Wednesday, January 1. The WTA World No. 3 continued her dominance in singles, winning her third consecutive match in straight sets defeating Zhang Shuai.
Later, Fritz sealed the tie with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Zhang Zhizhen without facing a single break point in the match. The ATP World No. 4 dominated the encounter, later revealing how Gauff's perfect performances have been mounting the pressure on him.
"Coco did such a good job putting us ahead and giving me the chance to come out and put us through," Taylor Fritz said via Tennis.com. "There was a little bit of pressure because I didn't want to be the one who loses it for the team after Coco won all her matches this week. I played a really solid match. Really happy with it."
Kazakhstan and the USA will travel from Perth to Sydney for the United Cup semifinals scheduled for Saturday, January 4. Their opponents are yet to be decided, with Poland facing Great Britain and the Czech Republic taking on Italy in the remaining quarterfinals.
