Several fans lauded Coco Gauff on her victory at the 2024 WTA Finals. The 20-year-old staged a remarkable comeback to edge out seventh seed Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2).
Gauff entered the year-end championship as the third seed and started with a 6-3, 6-2 win over compatriot Jessica Pegula. She then beat defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-4 before losing her final round-robin match 5-7, 4-6 to eighth seed Barbora Krejcikova.
Coco Gauff registered a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Aryna Sabalenka to set up a final clash against Zheng Qinwen. The Chinese started off the match well and a solitary break gave her the first set. Gauff was a break down in the second set but bounced back to win it 6-4 and force the match into a decider.
Once again, the American was a break down but she broke back and even had a championship point during the 12th game. The 20-year-old was unable to convert it and the set went to a tiebreak. Gauff won 6-2 to register a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) victory and become the youngest champion at the WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
Several fans lauded the American's victory in Riyadh, with one saying that she didn't beat Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka "for nothing".
"Coco didn't clear Iga and Sab for nothing. Good for her," the fan said.
One fan said that the match was worthy of a final, adding that it was time for Gauff to receive the respect she earned.
"A match worthy of the final! It's time for some people to give Coco the respect she's earned. So proud of Coco for ending this season on a high note, and also Qinwen for having an amazing year. What a time to be a WTA fan," the fan said.
One fan argued that the WTA Finals 2024 was the most impressive title win of Gauff's career so far ahead of her US Open triumph last year.
"Holy cow that was nuts! I would argue that's the most impressive tournament win of her career — even more than her US Open win. She beat two mutlislam winners and World Number 1s as well as the gold medalist to win. Absolutely insane route to the trophy," the fan said.
Here are more fan reactions to Coco Gauff's triumph at the WTA Finals:
"Won against Swiatek in two sets, won against Sabalenka and two sets and thenc coming back against Zheng after losing the first set to win like this. What an incredible tournament from Coco," the fan said.
"The coco haters are crying right now," the fan said.
"Coco was such a fighter for this LFG. She completely neutralized Zheng’s excellent serving after going 55% unreturned in the first set," one fan commented.
"Just tried to stay in the moment" - Coco Gauff on her victory at the WTA Finals
Speaking in her post-match press conference, Coco Gauff mentioned that she was resilient and fought for every point. The American also said she was very proud of the way she played.
"Just staying resilient, fighting for every point. I know I was like a couple points away from losing, but, you know, I just tried to stay in the moment, honestly, and I'm really proud of myself," the 20-year-old said, as quoted by WTA.
Gauff will end the 2024 season with 52 wins out of 68 matches, winning three tournaments. Besides the China Open, the 20-year-old also won the China Open and the ASB Classic in Auckland.
