With the 2025 Australian Open kicking off on Sunday, January 12, third seed Coco Gauff began her campaign with a flying start. Her outfit also drew attention, eliciting a four-word reaction from former world No. 1 Boris Becker.

Under the lights at Rod Laver Arena, it took Coco Gauff 81 minutes to defeat her compatriot Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open. Gauff is seeking to lift her second silverware of the season, having won the United Cup earlier in January with the United States.

On Monday, Boris Becker shared a video from an on-court interview where the 20-year-old was asked about the inspiration behind her outfit for the tournament. In response, she stated that she is a huge Marvel fan and loves the cut-outs on the outfits of many female superheroes. She praised New Balance's designers but acknowledged the bodysuit can be tough to get into. She said:

“I’m a huge Marvel fan, and a lot of the female superheroes have cool cut-outs on their outfits. That’s what I wanted to do. New Balance has great designers; it’s actually kind of a pain to get into because it is a bodysuit, guys! I have to put the bottom part first and pull it over my head.
"It’s kind of a struggle, and if you can’t hold your bladder, it’s also not a good idea. You have to sacrifice for fashion!”

Gauff's response prompted a reaction from Boris Becker, who shared the post on X and expressed his admiration for her.

“Big fan of Coco” - Boris Becker wrote.

Following Coco Gauff's victory over Sophia Kenin, she will next face world No. 173 Jodie Anna Burrage in the second round on Wednesday (Jan. 15). This is Gauff's sixth appearance at the Australian Open since turning pro. Her best performance came at the 2024 edition of the tournament, where she reached the semifinals before she was eliminated by eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka.

For Jodie Burrage, this is the second time she is participating in the main draw of the Australian Open. Her first appearance was last season, when she was knocked out in the first round by Tamara Korpatsch.

Gauff and Burrage have faced off once on the WTA Tour. It was in the round of 16 at the 2023 Eastbourne International where Gauff emerged victorious.
