Coco Gauff has opened up about the inspiration behind her striking outfit for the 2025 Australian Open. The American went into detail about the unique elements of her kit while also disclosing the "sacrifices" she was forced to make in the name of fashion.
Gauff has made a strong start in her quest to win her maiden title at the Melbourne Slam, claiming a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory over compatriot Sofia Kenin in 80 minutes. However, the World No. 3 captured attention for more than just her stellar performance, leaving fans enamored by her stylish New Balance outfit. The ensemble included a white bodysuit with side cutouts and a backless design, complemented by an olive green wraparound skirt.
Speaking to Laura Robson in her on-court interview, Coco Gauff disclosed that the side cutouts were inspired by her love for Marvel and superheroes. While she lavished praise on the New Balance designers for their creativity, the 20-year-old admitted that it was a "pain" for her to put on the kit due to the bodysuit's intricate design and shed light on the struggle of having to use the bathroom.
The skirt was also designed to reflect the former US Open champion's personal style, incorporating her fondness for cargo pants.
"This outfit, I'm a huge Marvel fan, and a lot of the female superheroes have cool cutouts on their outfits, so that's what I wanted to do. New Balance has great designers. It's actually kind of a pain to get into because it is a bodysuit, so I have to put the bottom part on first and pull it over my head, so it's kind of struggle," Coco Gauff said.
"If you can't hold your bladder, it's also not a good idea, but you have to sacrifice for fashion. Then the skirt, I like to wear cargo pants, but obviously I'm not going to play tennis in pants, so we make like a cargo skirt," she added.
Gauff also revealed that the design of her shoes was influenced by basketball sneakers, in a nod to her father Corey's desire for her to pursue a professional basketball career.
"Then my shoes are inspired by basketball shoes because my dad wanted me to play basketball but I'm glad I chose tennis," she said.
Coco Gauff to locks horns with Jodie Burrage in Australian Open 2R after 'tough match' against Sofia Kenin
During her on-court interview, Coco Gauff acknowledged her "tough" battle against Sofia Kenin and took satisfaction in her triumphant performance in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open.
Although the youngster admitted that there was room for improvement on her second serve and shed light on her struggle to see in the sun, she expressed delight with her ability to work through the challenges.
"It was a tough match for me today. I knew going in it was going to be difficult, but I'm happy with how I played. I maybe could've served some second serves better but I was struggling to see the ball and I'm just happy I was able to manage through that today," Coco Gauff said.
Following her win over Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff will lock horns with Jodie Burrage in the second round. The American holds a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record, having claimed a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory in their sole previous encounter at the 2023 Eastbourne International.
