American tennis stars Coco Gauff and Madison Keys have celebrated their compatriot Taylor Townsend's entry into the semifinals of the women's doubles at the Australian Open tennis championships. Pairing up with Katerina Siniakova, the 28-year-old beat the French-Chinese pairing of Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai 6-1, 7-5.
The top-seeded pair will next face off against the pairing of Russian teenagers, Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva.
Following the quarterfinal victory, Townsend, who is quite active on social media, shared a few stunning pictures from the match shot by noted photographer Simeon Kelly. The last slide of the Instagram post featured a Black man doing a few improvised dance steps.
"Semis, we vibing," Townsend captioned her post.
The post soon attracted the attention of fellow American tennis stars Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, who showered their compatriot with love and encouragement ahead of her next match.
Keys, who has made the semifinals of the singles draw, wrote underneath the post, "Another one."
Gauff also commented, "lfggg."
Taylor Townsend, who was struggled with her singles form in recent years, has found a new lease of life in doubles where she has posted a string of remarkable achievements lately.
Townsend partnered with Siniakova to win her first Major doubles title, defeating Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe in the 2024 Wimbledon final, 7-6(5), 7-6(1). Continuing its string of impressive results, the duo also reached the championship match of the WTA Finals later that year, losing to Dabrowski and Routliffe 5-7, 3-6.
Madison Keys is the last American remaining in the women's singles competition
Madison Keys has continued her impressive run of form at the Australian Open, dismantling Elina Svilotina in a tight three-setter (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) at the Rod Laver Arena. Keys will next face No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, who cruised past eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro in her quarterfinal encounter.
With her win over Svitolina, Keys became the final American player remaining in the singles section of the women's draw. In her post-match on-court interview, Keys, 29, revealed that the key to her success at this year's Australian Open has been playing "smarter."
“I think I play a little bit smarter for sure, probably a little bit less fearless," Madison Keys said. "But to be here 10 years later in the semi-finals again, I’m really proud of myself."
However, Coco Gauff, the top-seeded American in the women's singles draw at No. 3, suffered a shock upset. She lost in the quarterfinal to Spain's Paula Badosa, who is making a comeback after an injury-plagued 2024 season.
