Coco Gauff has reflected on her emotional reaction to TikTok being banned in the USA, only for the social media platform to resume services less than a day later. The 20-year-old, who felt the impact of the ban even during her campaign at the 2025 Australian Open, was relieved by the platform's return.
Continuing her quest to win her second Grand Slam title at this year's Melbourne Slam, Gauff squared off against Belinda Bencic in the fourth round. After losing the opening set, the World No. 3 mounted an impressive comeback to claim a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Major.
Following her victory, Coco Gauff candidly shared her heartbreak over TikTok's ban and opened up about her love for the platform. Although the American acknowledged that she would likely be more productive and read more books if the ban was upheld, she expressed her hope that access to the app would resume soon.
"But yeah, hopefully, it comes back. I don't know, it's really sad. I've been on the app since it was called Musical.ly. So, yeah, I love TikTok. I don't know, it's like an escape," Gauff said in her post-match press conference. "So, I guess it'll force me to read books more, and yeah, be more a productive human probably."
When TikTok services were restored in the USA shortly afterwards, Gauff took to social media and humorously admitted her regret about being overly "dramatic" regarding the ban.
"Tik tok is back😭 never being dramatic again hahaha," Gauff posted on X.
The American, who was devastated to find her access to TikTok blocked even in Australia, shared a screenshot of the app's welcome back message, which revealed that the platform was reinstated due to "President Trump's efforts."
Ahead of his inauguration on January 20, Trump announced his intention to issue an executive order that would delay the ban until a deal could be reached to "protect national security."
"Lmafaooo we were dramatic for what," Gauff wrote on her Instagram story.
Coco Gauff to take on Paula Badosa in Australian Open QF
With the weight of the TikTok ban off her mind, Coco Gauff will lock horns with Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open, following the Spaniard's 6-1, 7-6(2) win over Olga Danilovic.
While their head-to-head record is evenly matched at 3-3, Gauff has triumphed in their two most recent encounters. Following a hard-fought 5-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at the 2024 Italian Open, the World No. 3 defeated Badosa 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals of the China Open en route to her title win at the WTA 1000 event.
The winner of the highly anticipated battle between Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa will square off against top seed and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semifinals of the Melbourne Slam.
