Coco Gauff shared her excitement about teaming up with Taylor Fritz at the 2025 United Cup, which kicks off on December 27, 2024. She mentioned that it would be "cool" to play with him and expressed hope to perform even better than they did at the Olympics.
The United Cup is an international tennis event held on hard courts, with mixed-gender teams from 18 countries. It acts as a warm-up for the Australian Open and will be hosted in two cities this year: Sydney and Perth.
Gauff and Fritz will represent Team USA, which also includes Denis Kudla, Danielle Collins, Robert Galloway, and Desirae Krawczyk, with Michael Russell serving as the team captain.
On Thursday, December 26, the official X account (formerly Twitter) of the tournament shared an interview with Coco Gauff, who expressed her excitement about participating, saying:
"It's my first time playing, so I'm super excited! I like playing team events, so hopefully, I can represent my country well.”
She mentioned that this will be her second time partnering with Fritz. The American pair previously teamed up for the mixed doubles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they were defeated in the quarterfinals by the Canadian duo Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski in a tiebreak.
“Yeah, it's really cool to play with Taylor. Obviously, we're both coming off a good year-end, and it will be our second time playing together, so hopefully, we can do even better than the Olympics,” she said.
Team USA's opening match in the United Cup will take place on Sunday, Day 3, when they face Team Canada. Taylor Fritz will go head-to-head with Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Coco Gauff takes on former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. Their second Group A match is scheduled for Day 5, December 31, against Croatia.
Coco Gauff to eye 2nd Grand Slam at Australian Open 2025 after United Cup campaign
Coco Gauff is setting her sights on a second Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open, following her breakthrough victory at the 2023 US Open.
Before heading to Melbourne for the tournament, scheduled from January 12 to 26, the American is confident that her participation in the United Cup will offer solid preparation.
“Just to get some matches against some top players. We both have to play pretty high-ranked players for the first two matches and yeah, so it'll be a good test before the Australian Open,” she said in the video uploaded by the tournament’s X account.
In 2024, Coco Gauff reached the semifinals of the Happy Slam but fell short against Aryna Sabalenka. Now, after an intense off-season training regimen, she is determined to rise to the top from her current position as World No. 3.
This season didn’t unfold as planned for her initially. She missed out on securing any Grand Slam titles but managed to end it on a high note by winning the WTA Finals title in Riyadh.
