Coco Gauff was in awe of WNBA standout Caitlin Clark for the latter's Time Athlete of the Year achievement. Gauff concluded the year with the WTA Tour finals singles title, while Clark ended the season with the WNBA Rookie of the Year honor.
Gauff, who reached career-high rankings of World No. 2 in singles and No. 1 in doubles, recorded a successful 2024 season. Advancing to her second semi-finals of the Italian Open, Gauff surpassed Caroline Wozniacki for the most WTA 1000 wins before turning 21. She partnered with Katerina Siniaková to clinch her first Grand Slam doubles title at the 2024 French Open.
Facing a fourth-round defeat at the US Open, she became the first American to win the WTA Finals since Serena Williams in 2014. Days after concluding her season, she lauded another standout athlete, Caitlin Clark, who achieved the Time Athlete of the Year honor after an impressive WNBA rookie season. Clark's Instagram post featured her in casual wear, dribbling the basketball and posing for the camera.
"TIME Athlete of the Year," her caption read.
Gauff commented with a pair of heart-eyed emojis below the post.
Caitlin Clark, the Iowa Hawkeyes alumni considered one of the greatest collegiate players of all time, became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer and two-time national player of the year. Representing the US at the youth international level, the 22-year-old won two golds at the FIBA U-19 World Cup and one at the FIBA Americas U-16 Championship.
Winning the Best Female College Athlete ESPY Award in 2024, Clark joined the Indiana Fever team as the first overall pick for the 2024 WNBA draft. Her stellar season ended with the WNBA Rookie of the Year honor.
Coco Gauff started training for the 2025 season by running on the track
After a successful 2024 run, Coco Gauff shared her training regime for the 2025 season, ready to unfold in a few days. She shared a video of her running the 400m on the track on her Instagram handle and expressed relief for not choosing tracks as her career.
"Me finishing my last 400m, you girl was tired. Been doubling up fitness sessions almost all week plus tennis practice every day loll. Today's "I'm glad I didn't choose track as my sport" workout was 4 sets of 500m, 3 sets of 800M and 5 sets of 400m to finish it off (which was my fav)," her caption read.
She was also the flag-bearer of the US team at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, becoming the youngest athlete to receive the honor.
