Coco Gauff's brother Codey has paid tribute to baseball legend Ricky Henderson, who died at 65 on December 20, 2024. The Grand Slam champion's first sibling has committed to the University of Missouri's baseball roster.
Gauff, who clinched her first year-end title at the WTA Finals, has two brothers Codey and Cameron. While the youngest chose art after initially playing football and tennis, Codey followed in his sister's sporting footsteps and pursued baseball.
Gearing up for his class with Mizzou, the baseball youngster took to his Instagram story to honor the MLB Hall of Famer Henderson, popularly known as the 'Man of Steal' and the league's all-time leader in stolen bases. As confirmed by his family, the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics baseballer died on Friday before his 66th birthday on Christmas.
Last week, Coco Gauff's brother shouted out Travis Hunter, the Colorado receiver/cornerback honored with the 90th Heisman trophy for an exceptional season.
Gauff has a career-high ranking of No. 2. Having won the 2023 US Open title, the 20-year-old became the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony's youngest US athlete flagbearer. She has nine WTA Tour singles and doubles titles each.
Coco Gauff's father on how the tennis player and her baseballer brother Codey grew up together
Coco Gauff's father Corey, a former college basketballer at Georgia State University, was the two-time Grand Slam champion's first coach. He has constantly supported both Gauff and her brother Codey's athletic pursuits. In an interview with USA Baseball earlier this year, he shared how the siblings grew up together playing different sports:
"It's been good to see them grow up and compete in the sports that they love while also keeping their academics first. I like that they still want to learn and get better everyday. Coco chose what she wanted to do very early on. Codey played football for a little bit and some basketball, kind of arriving at baseball a little bit later in life than Coco did with tennis, but they both worked really hard growing up.
They both have unique skill sets in their respective sports. It’s been great to watch them grow. Coco is actually playing right now while Codey’s game is going on."
Gauff will next take the tennis court at the 2025 Australian Open.
