Coco Gauff will begin her Asian swing against Clara Burel at China Open 2024
Coco Gauff will begin Asian swing at the 2024 China Open against French player Clara Burel.
Last year, Gauff made it to the semifinals of the WTA 1000 hard court tournament, before being defeated by the eventual champion, Iga Swiatek. This year, the American is seeded fourth and will start her campaign in the second round against Burel after receiving a first-round bye.
Meanwhile, Clara Burel was initially supposed to face Caroline Dolehide in the first round at the China Open. However, a withdrawal from Jelena Ostapenko due to an abdominal injury led to Dolehide taking Ostapenko's place, and lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch replaced Dolehide.
Burel went head-to-head with Korpatsch in the first round and emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to secure her place in the second round.
Coco Gauff and Clara Burel have only met once on the WTA tour, during the second round of the 2024 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where the American triumphed with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).
The winner of the match between Gauff and Burel will move on to face either 26th seed Katie Boulter or Taylor Townsend in the third round.
