Coco Gauff has kicked off her 2025 season in style, leading the USA to victory at the United Cup. The victory has bolstered her confidence ahead of the 2025 Australian Open, which will run from January 12 to 26.

During a post-match press conference, she was asked about her confidence in her partner, Taylor Fritz. She responded that she had complete faith in him and focused on doing her part first.

“I had, like, a lot of confidence in Taylor even before this week came. So I knew that if I got my point on the board, if I did my job, that the job would be done. So I had full belief in him. Even in the tight moments, he came through, yeah.”

After scoring the match-winning point, the American celebrated with a unique move, mimicking digging with a shovel. She later explained that the inspiration came from her teammate Denis Kudla.

“It came from Denis,” she shared.
“Honestly, I think it started, like, in my match against China. I was playing Shuai, and she was playing really great tennis. You know, he was, like, great digging, keep digging. Then the shovel celebration came from him. I just kind of took it and ran with it. That was the theme of the week for me.”

When the 20-year-old was asked how much confidence winning her first United Cup gave her ahead of the Australian Open, she shared her thoughts enthusiastically.

“Yeah, I mean, honestly before every Grand Slam, I have the belief that I can win, and especially after US Open, I proved that I could do it. I definitely have belief that I can win.”

She continued:

“Obviously this start of the season gives me a lot of confidence. I feel like when I'm playing confident tennis I'm playing great tennis. I definitely feel confident going into AO.”

Coco Gauff is expected to be seeded third in women's singles at the Australian Open.
