Taylor Townsend received support from Coco Gauff's mother Candi Gauff as she won the doubles title with Katerina Siniakova at the 2025 Australian Open. Townsend had come into the tournament fresh from her final appearance at the WTA Finals in 2024.
Townsend's Grand Slam stint at the 2024 US Open had ended in the semifinals but she partnered back up with Siniakova to make a mark in Melbourne. The duo blazed through the rounds to reach the final, eventually winning their second Grand Slam doubles title in two sets.
During her post-match interview, Townsend shared how her achievement as a Black girl would encourage little girls like her to dream big.
"This is a really great tournament for Americans and for girls that look like me, and I hope this can help inspire a little girl from the south side of Chicago, grew up in Atlanta and now in Melbourne winning the Australian Open," she said (via WTA Instagram).
The 2023 US Open singles champion Coco Gauff's mother Candi Gauff shared the post on her Instagram stories to support Townsend.

Coco Gauff, on the other hand, fell in the women's singles quarterfinals to Paula Bedosa.
Taylor Townsend kick-started her 2024 season by winning the Adelaide International. She made it to her third Grand Slam doubles final at the Wimbledon Championships, eventually winning the title by defeating the top-seeded Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in straight sets. The Australian Open marks her second Grand Slam title.
Taylor Townsend lauded fellow American and woman of color Madison Keys for her Australian Open achievement

Besides Taylor Townsend's victory, Madison Keys took her maiden Grand Slam title in the women's singles. The latter defeated World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the final. During her post-match press conference, when Townsend was asked about Keys' triumph, she highlighted that women of color finishing on top at the 2025 AO Open would inspire the up-and-coming generations.
"I look at Madison and all the things she's been through when she played Sloane [Stephens] in 2017, you know, it was two women of color in the finals that weren’t Venus [Williams] and Serena [Williams]."
She added:
"Even her being a woman of color winning here and then me as well, I just think that it’s so inspiring to be able to have little girls and boys looking at us. This is history in the making and I think that it’s something so special. So I can’t even put into words how happy I am."
Townsend has seven WTA Tour doubles titles in her list of achievements.
