Coco Gauff recently surpassed $20 million in prize money after earning a record-breaking $4.8 million by winning the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh. This win in Saudi Arabia marked her fourth title of the season.

Gauff had a successful season this year, which she kicked off by defending her title at the 2024 ASB Classic by defeating Elina Svitolina in the final. She then claimed the China Open title, overcoming Karolina Muchova in the championship match.

The former US Open champion also won the women's doubles event at the French Open, partnering with Katerina Siniakova to defeat the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the final

In Riyadh, Coco Gauff was placed in the Orange Group and she began her campaign by defeating compatriot Jessica Pegula 6–3, 6–2 and defending champion Iga Swiatek 6–3, 6–4 in the first two group stage matches.

However, in the third group stage match, the 20-year-old lost to Barbora Krejčíková 5-7, 4-6. Gauff then bounced back in the semifinals and defeated World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4), 6-3 before ultimately winning the title by triumphing over Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) in the final.

Coco Gauff winning the 2024 WTA Finals not only earned her a substantial $4.8 million prize money but also propelled her career earnings past the $20 million mark. Following this, she became the fourth player born in the 2000s after Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga Swiatek to have achieved this impressive milestone.

During the post-match press conference following her win over Zheng Qinwen in the final of the 2024 WTA Finals, Coco Gauff expressed her thoughts on winning the $4.8 million prize money.

Gauff stated that she is not one to splurge and is unsure of how she will use her earnings from the tournament as it is a lot of money.

"I didn't know, like I knew it was some money, but I didn't know that much, I don't know, I'm not someone who likes to spend a lot of money to be honest. I don't know what I'll do with it. That's a lot of money...," Gauff said

Gauff also mentioned that her primary focus before entering the tournament was to compete for herself rather than for financial gain.

"Honestly, I wanted to win this for myself I didn't know that it was the biggest prize check on this tour, I didn't know anything about that. I knew there was money, but I try not to never play for this, but that's cool," she added.

The last American to win the WTA Finals before Coco Gauff was Serena Williams in 2014. Williams secured her fifth and final season-ending title by defeating Simona Halep 6–3, 6–0 in the championship match.
