Coco Gauff will square off against Aryna Sabalenka in the second semifinal of the WTA Finals on Friday. The head-to-head between the duo is locked at 4-4.
After opening her account at the Majors in the 2023 US Open, observers and fans had high expectations from Gauff this year. She chalked up title-winning runs in Auckland and Wuhan, but couldn't make a significant impact at the Majors. Meanwhile, she reached the third round of the Paris Olympics, where she lost to Donna Vekic in straight sets.
Aryna Sabalenka, on the other hand, had a solid season this year, winning in Melbourne, New York, Cincinnati, and Wuhan. She is the only player to win three titles at the Wuhan Open and is unbeaten at the event so far. The Belarusian secured runner-up finishes in Madrid and Rome, losing out in the latter to Iga Swiatek.
Gauff and Sabalenka are statistically the most in-form players on tour in the last few weeks. The Belarussian has won two out of her last three meetings against Gauff and will fancy her chances again on Friday. Sabalenka recently defeated the American in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Gauff showcased her quality with a remarkable win against Iga Swiatek in the group stage, but also showed her vulnerability in losing to Barbora Krejcikova in the third bout. She will be eager to put up a flawless performance against the top seed and enter the final in Riyadh.
Sabalenka, meanwhile, dominated her first two matches but lost to Elena Rybakina in the third match. She will need to recover from this minor setback for the semifinal and begin on a strong note.
The winner between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka will either face Barbora Krejcikova or Zheng Qinwen in the finals.
