Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa will lock horns in a semifinal showdown at the China Open 2024 on Saturday, October 5. The American's journey in Beijing started smoothly but she had to navigate some troubled waters in her last two rounds.
Gauff registered straight-sets wins over Clara Burel and Katie Boulter to reach the fourth round. She then took on Naomi Osaka and found herself down a set. She nabbed the second set to level the proceedings, only for her rival to retire due to an injury.
The 20-year-old faced qualifier Yulia Starodubtsewa in the quarterfinals, and overcame a one-set deficit to beat her 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. She has reached her first semifinal since June and has advanced to the last four here for the second year in a row.
Badosa ousted Viktoriya Tomova and Rebecca Sramkova in her first couple of matches. She then took down the in-form Jessica Pegula to make the quarterfinals, and beat Zhang Shuai 6-1, 7-6 (4) to book her spot in the semifinals.
Badosa has now reached her second straight WTA 1000 semifinal. Her rise over the last few months has been remarkable. She fell out of the top 100 in April and is now on the verge of re-entering the top 10, provided she wins the whole thing.
Gauff and Badosa's rivalry has been close, with the head-to-head leaning 3-2 in the latter's favor. Their last two meetings have been on clay, and each player tallied a win over the other.
Badosa has a 2-1 edge on hardcourts and won their duels en route to the Indian Wells title in 2021 and in San Jose a year later. Gauff's only win over her rival came at the Qatar Open two years ago.
Their matches have always been entertaining, and this one is likely to follow suit as well. On that note, here are all the details about their upcoming contest:
