Nick Kyrgios struggled with discomfort in his wrist during his opening-round match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the 2025 Brisbane International. The Aussie had been out of action for over a year due to various injuries, including a serious wrist injury that required surgery.

After making his highly-anticipated return with a win in doubles alongside Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios made his return in singles against the rising star, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Interestingly, both men possess massive serving prowess making their match a potential high-octane thriller. The match lived up to its hype but the Frenchman dampened the Aussie's return with a 7-6(2), (4)6-7, 7-6(3).

During the match, Nick Kyrgios showed signs of discomfort in his recovering right wrist but decided to tape it up and continue with the match. The Aussie had undergone wrist surgery in September 2023 in Adelaide. A wrist struggle coupled with the Frenchman hitting a staggering 36 aces during the three-set thriller, proved to be too much for the returning Aussie.

Speaking about his wrist struggles during an interview with Canberra Times in June this year, the 29-year-old revealed how he faced this issue for his entire career.

"This has been a really challenging time - the hardest of my career. I definitely struggled with this my whole career. I wasn't big on doing conditioning or anything that got me out of my comfort zone, but you've got to build that resilience in your body, and in here, it's just mental," Kyrgios said.

However, this heartbreaking defeat doesn't mean that Kyrgios' time in Brisbane has come to an end. The Aussie teamed up with his friend Novak Djokovic and the two men kicked off their run with a thrilling 6-4, (4)6-7, 10-8 win against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies.
