Nick Kyrgios has addressed the claims that his animosity toward Jannik Sinner stems from the World No. 1 dating his former girlfriend, fellow tennis player Anna Kalinskaya. The Australian strongly denied the suggestion, asserting that his issue with Sinner was rooted in the World No. 1's failed doping tests.
Kyrgios has made no secret about his disdain for the Italian since he avoided a ban after testing positive for Clostebol. Since the no-fault verdict, the Australian has thrown shade at Sinner for "acting like a victim," called out Lleyton Hewiit's son Cruz for practicing with the World No. 1, and referred to the two-time Grand Slam champion as "the Grinch."
Given Nick Kyrgios' frequent and harsh attacks on Jannik Sinner, tennis journalist Jon Wertheim suggested that the Australian wasn't motivated by "bonafide concerns about doping" but by personal grievances.
In conversation with Andy Roddick on the former World No. 1's 'Served' podcast, Wertheim suggested that Sinner's relationship with Anna Kalinskaya, who previously dated Kyrgios in 2020, was the real source of the hostility.
"This is just a personal vendetta. There is a woman involved here, who also happens to be a player," Wertheim said.
"But he didn't even seem to understand the doping protocols and the context to begin with which leads me to conclude this is all just a bad faith vendetta against a player who's now dating a former girlfriend and nothing more," he added.
However, Kyrgios vehemently rejected Jon Wertheim's claims, insisting that he didn't have time for players who were "cheating the system." The 29-year-old asserted that he didn't care who Sinner was dating and emphasized that he was in a happy relationship with his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi.
The Australian also lashed out at Andy Roddick, referring to the American as a "sheep" for entertaining Wertheim's claims.
"Hahaha of course - sweep sweep sweep, how is this now my fault? I couldn’t care less where sinner lays his wood 😭😂 I’m in a happy relationship 🙏🏽 I just don’t like people who are cheating the system. Roddick - never ever thought you were a sheep my guy lol," Kyrgios posted on X.
Despite his denial, Nick Kyrgios previously came under fire for derogatoriously jibing at his ex-girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya during his feud with Jannik Sinner.
Nick Kyrgios: "If I played Jannik Sinner in Australian Open, I would just turn it into an absolute riot, I would lose all respect"
With the Australian Open scheduled to commence on January 12, Nick Kyrgios recently expressed his desire to extend his feud with Jannik Sinner to the tennis court at his home Slam.
During an appearance on the 'Nothing Major' podcast, the Australian asserted if their showdown materialized, he would "lose all respect" and rally the crowd against Sinner in an effort to win.
"I just want to go out there and I really want to play Jannik Sinner. Like I'm waiting for it man," Kyrgios said. "If I played him in Australian Open, like I would get every single person in the crowd to just like get on him."
"Like I would just turn it into an absolute riot. Like I would lose all respect, all respect would go out the window and I would just do anything to win," he added.
Despite Kyrgios' eagerness to face Jannik Sinner, their potential matchup at the Australian Open seems unlikely since the 29-year-old has sustained an abdominal strain.
