Casper Ruud lamented the unavailability of the video review in tennis in 2024 as controversy erupted during the second round match between Alexander Zverev and Hugo Gaston at the Hamburg European Open. The two men engaged in a grueling contest where the German prevailed. However, a controversial double ball bounce call by the chair umpire cost him the opening set, leaving him furious.

The German staged an impressive comeback from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and prevailed in two hours and 36 minutes in front of the home crowd in Hamburg.

The controversial moment came in the first set, when Gaston returned a backhand smash from Zverev that forced him to stretch his body and follow it up with a cross-court backhand to clinch the set.

Zverev was absolutely livid at the chair umpire as he was fully convinced that Gaston had returned his shot after the ball had already bounced. He argued with the Frenchman and the chair umpire, and even called for the supervisor. The World No. 4's pleas came to no avail, though, as he had to continue the match from the second set.

Here's a look at the incident:

Casper Ruud responded to the video posted by Tennis TV, and shared his surprise at the fact that the video review system isn't in place even in 2024.

"Crazy to me that we’re in 2024 and it’s not possible to challenge/video review calls like this.."

Under his post, Casper Ruud was asked by a fan if he felt that one play or a wrong call could end up altering the outcome of a match.

"Casper, from your experience is one play or “missed call” like this going to REALLY change the outcome of a match?" the fan questioned.

The Norwegian answered that it could, but the chances of it happening were low. He gave examples of situations where just one point could prove detrimental.

"I think it could. Most cases no it won’t, but in some yes. In theory it could happen on match point at 6-5 in the deciding set tiebreak. That’s either match over or 6-6 in the tiebreak.."

Casper Ruud is currently playing doubles at the Nordea Open alongside Rafael Nadal. They are in the semifinals where they will face Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos.
