Novak Djokovic's name being omitted, from the list of number of ranking points bagged by a male player on their way to becoming World No. 1 for the first time, irked fans. This incident occurred amid Jannik Sinner's rise to the top of the rankings on Monday.
Sinner's phenomenal form since the latter half of last year bore fruits as, after capturing the 2024 Australian Open and two Masters 1000 titles, the Italian reached the summit of men's tennis overtaking the Serb.
A fan took to X to post the ranking points required by other players such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Sinner's rival Carlos Alcaraz to achieve the same feat. Notably, when Federer and Nadal became No.1, the ranking distribution was different as winning a Major gave 1000 points, and winning a Masters gave 500 points, to mention a few.
However, Novak Djokovic's fans didn't take too kindly to the fact that the Serb's name was omitted from the list and the fact that took him 13,285 points to become the World No. 1. One fan pointed out the lack of research done.
"Gosh cringe that you haven’t done your research"
One fan quipped how the Serb's level was incomparable and his name was left out to not embarrass the other players.
"You are right, there are levels to this game and this level from Djokovic was so beyond that you can’t compare it with anyone else. Might as well leave it out not to embarrass anyone else"
Here are some other fan reactions.
"Novak had 13630 in 2011 when he became No1. Give the whole picture or don't do it at all...." a fan demanded.
"You forgot those Djokovic has to reach. These are far more then Sinner one. Djokovic is on different greatness. Let’s say things correctly not approximately has you want to report." a fan said.
"Where is Novak bro? Oh yeah so far ahead and beyond you can’t even see him." another fan said.
Some other fans compared Sinner's achievements as the World No. 1 to Djokovic's.
"Novak became no. 1 by winning Wimbledon and with 13285 points. Sinner became number 1 with 9525 points thanks to Novak's injury and withdrawal. And lo and behold, he lost to Alcaraz immediately as number 1." a fan mentioned
"Best testimony to Novak’s greatness is when people have to lie in an attempt to make their favourites look better. Todays society is full of 🤡🤡 Poor Sinner. He deserves better." a fan said
"ATP Rankings when Djokovic become No.1 With 13, 285 points. 2 Slams, 4 Masters, 8 Titles, 50W-1L for the year. 5 consecutive Final wins over then No. 1 Nadal. 4-1 vs. Federer, 14-1 vs top 10. Novak was 24. Sinner was not yet 10. Alcaraz was 8. Respect!" another fan mentioned
"Bravo Jannik Sinner. You deserve to be #1 in the world!" - Novak Djokovic congratulates the Italian on reaching the top
Jannik Sinner became the 29th man to hold the World No.1 ranking. He took to Instagram to thank the ATP Tour for the special presentation and the trophy he received on the occasion. He also expressed his excitement for the start of the grass swing.
"Thank you @atptour for today’s presentation, a lovely moment and I now look forward to start the grass court season 🌱💪🏼 forza," Sinner wrote on Instagram.
Novak Djokovic commented under the post congratulating the Italian on his achievement, stating how he deserved to be at the top of the tennis world.
"Bravo Jannik. You deserve to be #1 in the world! Congratulations! Congratulations on well deserved top spot of the world of tennis," the Serb said.
Both players are slated to head for the upcoming grass season next, however, the Serb recently went through a knee surgery which may derail his plans.
