Danielle Collins had a pretty crazy match against native Australian Destanee Aiava, whom she beat in three sets. After the match, Collins had some interesting comments both on the court and in the press conference.
The match itself featured the crowd being quitehostile towards Collins, as she was playing a native player. The American, though, is quite known for not really being bothered by it too much, as she doesn't mind a rowdy crowd. In fact, as she said after the match, stuff like that lights a fire in her to try and do even better.
It worked, and she won the match. As for the crowd, well, in her mind, they were obviously pretty drunk and simply wanted to see their player win the match.
"Destanee is from here, and I think they wanted her to win badly. I think a lot of people were super drunk and had a hard time controlling themselves and were really excited. I think they wanted to see a good, long, hard match. Ultimately, it was a pretty cool environment, I thought, even though it was pretty rowdy. This girl loves it." - Collins on the rowdy crowd
Australian crowds are generally known for being pretty vocal, especially when a player from Australia is playing at the event. Collins won't have to worry about that in her next match, but she generally doesn't worry about rowdy crowds.
Danielle Collins' message to Australian Open crowd
Not only does Collins not mind the crowd being rowdy towards her, she actually embraces stuff like that. Her next opponent is Madison Keys, a fellow American, but she doesn't fear any retribution from the crowd in that fixture.
In fact, when the 31-year-old was asked by a reporter about the crowd possibly carrying over some lingering feelings from her second-round match to the next one, she said:
"All I have to say: good luck pissing somebody off or getting under the skin of someone who literally doesn't give a... can I say it? I mean, seriously, good luck with somebody who really doesn't care."
Collins and Keys have locked horns thrice before, with the latter leading the head-to-head 2-1. Their last encounter came in the final of last season's Internationeaux de Strasbourg, with the 29-year-old winning 6-1, 6-2.
