Danielle Collins' sheer delight after watching USA teammate Coco Gauff win against Poland's Iga Swiatek in the 2025 United Cup final polarized tennis fans. While some found humor in it, others turned critical. Collins and Swiatek have history, with the American previously having accused the Pole of insincerity.
Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek kickstarted the 2025 United Cup final between USA and Poland, and the American produced an excellent display to seal a 6-4, 6-4 win over the World No. 2, helping USA establish a 1-0 lead. The 2023 US Open champion later headed to the American contingent sitting courtside to celebrate her win. Here, Danielle Collins could be seen enthusiastically cheering Gauff on. She also gave her compatriot a warm hug.
One group of tennis fans on X (formerly Twitter) found Danielle Collins' exuberant expression of joy humorous. These fans' takes stemmed from Collins' seeming disdain for the former World No. 1.
"I’m not sure who’s happier… Coco Gauff, Coco’s mom… or Danielle Collins," a fan wrote.
"Let's be real we all know it's Collins," another fan replied to the previous one.
"Ijbolllll Collins loving it coz she hates Iga," another chimed in.
However, others were less than impressed with Collins.
"This woman is 30. I don't even care for Iga but this is a 15 year old's behavior," wrote one fan.
"Classless b**ch as always," another stated harshly.
"Yes Karen Collins enjoy your moment. You will never achieve even that bi$h," yet another fan weighed in.
Taylor Fritz later sealed the deal for USA with a three-set win over Hubert Hurkacz, marking the nation's second United Cup title in three years.
Collins and Swiatek had earlier shaken each other's hands before the final tie got underway. However, it was a frosty handshake, especially from Collins' side.
Danielle Collins gave Iga Swiatek a cold handshake ahead of United Cup 2025 final between USA and Poland
The American and Polish contingents greeted each other in the buildup to the 2025 United Cup final. Here, Danielle Collins was captured by the cameras barely making eye contact with Iga Swiatek during the pair's handshake.
The strain in Collins and Swiatek's professional relationship started at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The American and the Pole faced each other in the quarterfinals, and the match ultimately went Swiatek's way after Collins retired with injury. During the pair's customary post-match handshake, Collins was seen giving Swiatek an earful. However, at the time, what the American said wasn't exactly clear.
Later, Collins opened up about the incident at a press conference.
"I told Iga she didn’t have to be insincere about my injury. I haven’t had the best experience and I don’t really feel like anybody needs to be insincere. They can be the way that they are, and I can accept that, and I don’t need the fakeness," Collins said.
Swiatek was later asked to share her thoughts on Collins' take, and the Pole was seemingly perplexed over the American's criticism of her.
