Several fans have expressed doubts over Danielle Collins' qualification in the WTA finals following an early exit from the Guadalajara Open. The American fell to the unseeded Olivia Gadecki in the second round of the WTA 500 event. Collins lacked rhythm from the start, losing the first set 6-3. Gadecki replicated the score in the second set, to win the match in just under 84 minutes.
This marked Collins' fourth consecutive loss, dating back to her Round of 16 defeat at Wimbledon 2024. She struggled during the North American hard-court swing, competing only at the Abierto GNP Seguros 2024, where she suffered an early second-round exit. Her struggle continued at the US Open, where she faced a defeat against Caroline Dolehide in the first round.
Journalist Jose Morgado shared this update on X (formerly Twitter).
Earlier this year, the 30-year-old announced that 2024 would be her final season before retirement. Given her recent struggles, Collins' chances of qualifying for her last WTA Finals are dwindling as the tournament in Riyadh will feature the top eight singles players from the 2024 WTA tour.
Responding to Morgado's post, several tennis fans doubted Collins' chances of qualifying for the WTA finals. A fan suggested that Collins should have retired earlier instead of continuing to compete while experiencing a series of losses.
"Danielle Collins with an even more pathetic end to her career than she could have ever imagined, she should’ve quit playing when she announced her retirement and not on this whole pathetic tour of losing," they wrote.
"She doesn’t have that fire she did in the first 2 Q’s of the year," another wrote.
"WTA 500 GUADALAJARA R2: Olivia Gadecki wins 6-3, 6-3 against Danielle Collins. Collins has now lost all 3 matches she's played since that injury in Paris, her dream final season doesn't appear like it'll end at the WTA Finals, although is still in the race," a fan said.
Here are a few more reactions from the fans:
"The Olympics did f*ck everyone over my god," a fan commented.
A fan sarcastically remarked that Collins seems disengaged from qualifying efforts, implying she's already mentally preparing for retirement.
"Is she trying hard to qualify? looks like she has two feet out the retirement door and elevated on the recliner, lately," they said.
"Very unfortunate", another chimed in.
Olivia Gadecki's victory over Danielle Collins marked her first career win over a top-20 player
Danielle Collins on why she avoided her US Open farewell ceremony
Danielle Collins' first-round match against Caroline Dolehide at the US Open marked her final Grand Slam appearance. Although the USTA had arranged a farewell ceremony, Collins hurried to the locker room and skipped it.
Furthermore, US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster followed Collins into the locker room to present her with flowers. While some fans criticized Collins for avoiding the ceremony, others supported her decision. Collins later justified her actions during her post-match press conference.
“I’m not somebody that likes to celebrate my accomplishments. I’ve struggled with feeling guilt around success and that's something that I've had to work on. I’m not great about having an all about me moment. I’d prefer to do something like that maybe in private. I feel like I’ve gotten enough attention to last a lifetime," she said ( at: 2:05).
Danielle Collins was also scheduled to compete in the doubles event with Caroline Garcia, but it was subsequently canceled.
