Danielle Collins aired two unapologetic takes on her cold handshake with Iga Swiatek ahead of the 2025 United Cup final tie between the USA and Poland. Collins and Swiatek haven't been on the best of terms since the controversial end to their quarterfinal clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
When the American and Polish playing contingents were greeting each other on the court before the first match of the United Cup final tie got underway, Collins offered a frosty handshake to Swiatek. The former World No. 7 barely made any eye contact with the Pole and swiftly looked the other way and moved on after the handshake. The tense exchange was captured by the cameras.
Following the USA's resounding title triumph over Poland at the international mixed-team tennis tournament, Danielle Collins took to her Instagram Stories and shared two posts. Both of them revolved around her bizarre handshake with Iga Swiatek. Collins captioned the first post:
"Didn't know if you guys noticed this but... New year, same me"
The second one was captioned:
"Sometimes I just gotta laugh at myself"
She even made her dismissive expression towards Swiatek her Instagram profile picture.
Collins and Swiatek's 2024 Paris Olympics quarterfinal contest ended in controversy. At the time, the American retired with injury, giving the Pole a walkover win to reach the semifinals. However, when the two came together to shake hands following Collins' mid-match retirement, the American had harsh words to say to Swiatek, leaving the Pole puzzled.
Later, Collins accused Swiatek of being "insincere". The Pole herself opened up about the incident later and stated that she did not know where the American's anger stemmed from.
Danielle Collins was ecstatic after Coco Gauff's United Cup final win over Iga Swiatek; which drew criticism from some tennis fans
Coco Gauff registered an emphatic 6-4, 6-4 victory against Iga Swiatek in the first match of the 2025 United Cup final tie. The win gave the USA the perfect platform to build on, which Taylor Fritz later did by downing Hubert Hurkacz and making the USA the champions of the international mixed-team tennis event for the second time in three years.
After Gauff's win over Swiatek, Collins, who was sitting courtside with the rest of the American contingent, couldn't contain her emotions. The American vociferously cheered for Gauff and also embraced her tightly.
However, Collins' reaction to Gauff's win didn't go down well with all tennis fans, with some opining that it stemmed from her 'hate' for Swiatek.
