Tennis fans were surprised by Danielle Collins’ lengthy exchange with Iga Swiatek after retiring from her 2024 Paris Olympics match. They had varying opinions on how the match unfolded.
Swiatek, the top seed, faced Collins in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event on Wednesday, July 31. The Pole started strong, clinching the opening set 6-1. Danielle Collins, however, fought back in the second set, allowing the World No. 1 just two games (6-2).
The match had its fair share of drama, as Iga Swiatek opted for an extended toilet break after losing the set. During the first game of the decider, Collins, who was serving, hit a powerful backhand shot directed at her opponent.
Swiatek, who took the hit on her right rib, fell to the ground, concerned. She got up a few moments later, after accessing the impact. Danielle Collins lost the serve, eventually giving Iga Swiatek a 2-0. The four-time French Open champion continued her aggression to clinch another break (3-0).
At this point, Danielle Collins called for a medical timeout. She managed to hold her serve once after that but retired from the match with the final score reading 6-1, 2-6, 4-1 (ret.).
During the net handshake, the American was captured having a lengthy conversation with Iga Swiatek, which visibly baffled the World No. 1.
Tennis fans, too, had their opinions about the dramatic end to the match.
"Seems U.S. women players are going to tell their opponents at the handshake what they think of them," another fan wrote, in light of controversies involving Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff.
"I love Collins … but what was in the water of the US women. Collins, Emma, Coco … looks like a pattern," one fan said.
"By coming across the net, she made sure the microphone didn't pick up what she said. Its not a good look on Danielle part," another fan opined.
"Yeah, Collins yelling at every point, hitting Iga in ribs with all power she has, then MTO, and in the end she is a victim," yet another fan chimed in.
"This annoys me so much, like you got so hurt by Iga’s toilet break that you decided to hit at her and then take a MTO of your own — Why the lecture at the end, then? As if you have ever been the bigger person…," one individual remarked.
A few other fans, though, backed Danielle Collins.
"Olympic keep delivering Drama upon Drama (DANIELLE COLLINS) otold (IGA SWIATEK) to meet her on US hardcourt she'll end that clay merchant there," one fan joked.
"I mean the stalling? The bathroom break? The extended ball toss or delays on break points? The racket up to stall more every time Collins faces a break point..? Iga acting so surprised. Collins is not wrong here," one fan said.
"wta + drama is an elite combination," another fan wrote.
Iga Swiatek advances to her maiden Olympics semifinal in Paris; Danielle Collins still alive in doubles
With her retirement against Iga Swiatek, Danielle Collins has crashed out of the women’s singles event.
She has, however, not withdrawn from her women’s doubles second-round match with partner Desirae Krawczyk, following her reported sunstroke during the quarterfinal. The pair is set to take on Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok.
Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, has advanced to her first Olympic semifinal. The Pole is the favorite to win the singles title, considering her World No. 1 ranking and success at the French Open. She faces China's Zheng Qinwen for a place in the Olympic final.
