Learner Tien, who beat Daniil Medvedev, shared his thoughts after a grueling marathon match that ended around 3 a.m. in the second round of the Australian Open. The shocking upset marked Tien's first-ever win against the Russian.

At just 19 years old, Tien became the second youngest American player to reach the third round of the Australian Open since Pete Sampras achieved the feat in 1990. On Thursday, January 16, in the tournament's second round, Tien faced three-time finalist Medvedev.

After an intense five-set thriller, he emerged victorious with a hard-fought win, sealing the match 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 1-6, 7-6(7). During the post-match on-court interview, Learner Tien reflected on the super tie-break, saying;

“I mean, I was definitely hoping it wasn't going to go to a fifth-set tiebreaker. But, you know, either way, just really happy to get a win.”

He added:

“I know I made it a lot harder than maybe it could have been... Losing the third was tough after playing for that long and having a match point. I didn't even get to touch the ball I don't think, it was an ace. So it was a little disappointing to see a fourth [set] after fighting back from a breakdown in the third.”

The American jokingly said:

"Honestly in the fourth set, I just had to pee so bad, so I was trying to finish it up fairly quick. But I also wanted to start the fifth serving, so I scrapped that game at 0-5, and it all worked out."
