Daniil Medvedev 'blocked the noise' as he defeated Alex de Minaur to notch his first win in the 2024 ATP Finals. The Russian said post-match that more fans led to more haters for a player and that it was a part and parcel of a player's career.
Medvedev had an underwhelming season, albeit by his elite standards, failing to clinch a single title. He had a brilliant first half this year but had a downward spiral post-Wimbledon. Despite the deterioration in his form, he managed to clinch the fourth seed at this year's ATP Finals.
The former World No. 1 kicked off his campaign against fifth seed Taylor Fritz but was beaten 4-6, 3-6 by the American No. 1. His frustration was on full display during the game as he kept throwing his racket in the air and also made an unusual return stance.
Following this defeat, Medvedev confessed during the press conference that he wanted the season to end as soon as possible. However, he also said that he would give it his best shot in the upcoming matches.
Medvedev seemingly backed his claim as he registered a statement 6-2, 6-4 win against seventh seed Alex de Minaur to keep his chances of survival in the tournament alive. The Russian, known for his iconic celebrations, debuted a new 'block the noise' celebration after his win and signed these words on the camera.
During the on-court interview, Daniil Medvedev also said that an increase in fans was directly proportional to the number of haters. He later explained the unusual way by which too much support can also be detrimental to a player. Hence, he wanted to 'block the noise', which he successfully managed to do against the Aussie.
"Just good to do it sometimes, for yourself, to remind yourself that you have to do it sometimes because the more popular you become, the more fans you get, the more haters you get, the more attention you get, and sometimes even the good noise can make you off balance."
"You know you win everything and everyone thinks you're god and something like this and you lose two matches and everybody’s like finished, your career is finished. So sometimes it's good just to block it and I managed to do it well today," he added.
Daniil Medvedev will play Jannik Sinner in his final group-stage match at the ATP Finals
Daniil Medvedev will face top seed Jannik Sinner in his final group-stage match of the 2024 ATP Finals, in what will be the 15th meeting between the two. The duo are currently tied at 7-7 in the head-to-head. While the Russian won the opening six matches in a row, the Italian turned things around to win seven out of their last eight matches to tie the head-to-head.
This will interestingly be the sixth meeting this year between the two. Their frequent meetings during the season sparked hilarious reactions from tennis fans.
Daniil Medvedev currently has one win and one loss at the ATP Finals. Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, won his opening bout against Alex de Minaur and will face Taylor Fritz next.
