Daniil Medvedev: "I'd love to defend my title somewhere"

Daniil Medvedev lifted the trophy at the 2023 Miami Open on Sunday (April 2), making it his fourth title of the season.

Taking on Jannik Sinner, Medvedev made a break of serve in his opponent's final service game to take the first set 7-5. The second set, meanwhile, witnessed an early break of serve from the Russian, who then held his nerves to wrap up the match 7-5, 6-3.

In a post-match interview for the Tennis Channel, the interviewer highlighted the World No. 4's achievement of winning 19 career titles in 19 different tournaments, prompting him to speak about his love of exploring different cities.

The two-time Australian Open finalist made a lighthearted comment that while it was a "cool achievement," he would like to hopefully defend one of them in the future.

"Well, it's true, but I would love to defend my title somewhere. I love all of my titles and I will be happy to win one of them two times. But yeah, I try to do my best in every tournament I play. I think it's a cool achievement, you know," he said.

"I will have nineteen different trophies at my home and yeah, I'm definitely enjoying travelling around the world and hopefully I can defend a title somewhere," he added.

After a stellar run on the hardcourts, Daniil Medvedev will now gear up for the upcoming clay season along with the rest of the tour.

Daniil Medvedev has had a dream run in his 2023 season so far. He won his maiden title of the season at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam against Italian Jannik Sinner. He then battled against Andy Murray to lift the trophy at the Qatar Open the following week.

He had a spectacular run at the Dubai Championships after that, where he defeated Novak Djokovic enroute to the title and did not drop a set in the tournament.

He finished runner-up at Indian Wells in his next tournament, falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the summit clash. His recent win at the Miami Open is the Russian's fourth title win out of five finals and places him in the fourth spot in the ATP rankings.

The 27-year old expressed his enthusiasm for the win and drew a parallel to his 2019 experience of winning four out of six finals.

"It's the best start of the season I have ever had. Amazing amount of points won," he said. "I think 2019 was great also with six finals and it was also new for me in 2019. So I think it's kind of the same," he added in the interview.
