Days after rocking Maria Sharapova outfit, 24-year-old Destanee Aiava returns to Australian Open with Ana Ivanovic's US Open kit

Australia's Destanee Aiava recently attracted attention for bringing back Maria Sharapova's 2012 US Open Nike dress during her qualifying campaign at the 2025 Australian Open. The 24-year-old has since gone one better in her bid to bring back classic outfits from the vault, wearing Ana Ivanovic's Adidas dress from the 2010 US Open during her second qualifying-round victory on Tuesday (January 7).

Aiava, ranked 195th in the world, is currently competing at the women's singles qualifying event at the 2025 Australian Open. The Aussie reached the final qualifying round in Melbourne on Tuesday (January 7), beating Hungary's Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes. She will next face Germany's Eva Lys for a place in the main draw of the tournament.

Destanee Aiava donned Maria Sharapova's cherry blossom Nike pink dress from the 2012 US Open in her first qualifying-round victory against Romania's Ana Bogdan on Monday. The outfit throwback became a talking point on X (formerly Twitter) hours later.

The qualifier, who has played the first round of the Australian Open four times in her career so far, added Ana Ivanovic's 2010 US Open dress to her tennis wardrobe during her second qualifying-round appearance at the Melbourne Slam. The Adidas outfit, which featured a mulberry pink bodice and medium pink silhouette, was a welcome sight for fans who remember Ivanovic fondly.

The Serb wore the all-pink dress to a fourth-round result at the US Open that year. She enjoyed a successful top-flight career in the 2000s, winning the French Open in 2008, spending nine weeks as the World No. 1 the same year, and winning 15 overall WTA titles before retiring from pro tennis in 2016.

As Destanee Aiava's throwback to Maria Sharapova's Nike dress from 13 years ago began doing rounds of social media, it also received some negative comments. One fan, in a since-deleted tweet on X, spoke against the Russian's outfit choice.

Aiava reposted the fan's tweet on her own X handle as she disclosed that their comment had "triggered her eating disorder".

"Good job triggering my ED," the Aussie wrote in her response to the fan on X.

The 24-year-old also used her platform to hit out at another detractor, who tweeted that the Aussie's "unproportionate body" and "bulges" had failed to do Sharapova's dress justice.

"Math isn’t mathing, stand on business and don’t be a hypocrite xo," she wrote in a separate tweet.

Aiava, who competes primarily on the ITF Circuit, will be eager to make it to the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time since 2021.
