Denis Shapovalov has reacted to the chair umpire controversies involving Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Zverev at the 2024 Shanghai Masters. The Canadian, who himself was a competitor at the event, was eliminated in the second round by Ben Shelton in straight sets.

The Masters 1000 event saw not one but two controversial moments on October 8. One of them came during the third-round matches of Frances Tiafoe vs Roman Safiullin and the other, during Alexander Zverev vs Tallon Griekspoor.

During the third set tiebreaker of his match against Safiullin, Tiafoe received a time violation which took away his first serve. This moment came at 5-5 and the American ended up losing the point and then the match. After shaking hands with the Russian, the 26-year-old lashed out at chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote with indecent language.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev was enraged at chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani during the opening set of his match against Griekspoor. The German returned a ball that was called against him due to a double bounce. This led to a huge tirade from Zverev. However, the replay showed that the ball had bounced twice, meaning Lahyani was correct.

Also, during Stan Wawrinka's match against Flavio Cobolli, chair umpire Carlos Bernardes accidentally awarded the Italian a crucial point instead of Wawrinka, which went unnoticed by every party involved. This led to Cobolli getting the only break of their three-set battle and helped him clinch a win over the former World No. 3.

Denis Shapovalov, who is no stranger to controversies with chair umpires, took to X formerly Twitter to seemingly react to the ongoing controversies with the hilarious and popular 'This is fine' meme.

Denis Shapovalov was recently involved in a controversy during the Mubadala Citi DC Open where he was disqualified from his match against Ben Shelton for shouting at the fans. Since the incident, he has been regularly voicing his opinions about controversies happening in the tennis world.

Alexander Zverev will face David Goffin in the fourth round of the 2024 Shanghai Masters, in what will be the seventh meeting between the two men. The German currently leads their head-to-head 4-2.

Goffin has been in amazing form so far. He kicked off his campaign with a comfortable straight-set win against James Duckworth and has followed it up with two comeback wins in subsequent rounds against 15th seed Lorenzo Mussetti and Marcos Giron.

The winner of their match will face either seventh seed Taylor Fritz or 12th seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Frances Tiafoe, who seemed to have found his form back during the North American hard-court swing, has struggled at the Asian swing so far.

He was ousted in the opening round of the Japan Open by compatriot Brandon Nakashima following which he entered the Shanghai Masters. Though the 26-year-old claimed a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Zhou Yi to kick off his campaign, he was eliminated early in the next round by Roman Safiullin.
