Nick Kyrgios used Daniil Medvedev's behavior at the 2024 ATP Finals to call out the tennis calendar. The Aussie picked up on the Russian's unique return position at the ATP Finals to make his argument.
Medvedev didn't enjoy the best of seasons this year and ended up winning no titles. Despite his underwhelming season, the Russian still managed to qualify for the ATP Finals as the fourth seed owing to his deep runs at the Australian Open, the Indian Wells Masters, Wimbledon, and some other tournaments.
He kicked off his Finals against Taylor Fritz but a strange incident occurred during their match. A visibly frustrated Medvedev, who was struggling against the American No. 1, decided on a unique return position where his racket was upside down.
During the latest of the podcast "Nothing Major," hosted by Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson, Nick Kyrgios, who was the guest, mentioned the Russian's behavior. He highlighted how players feel by the end of the season. Kyrgios said,
"Did you guys see how Medvedev was behaving at the end of the year. Like, someone like that, who's tennis orientated his whole life, and he's just writhe, by the end he was returning with the other side of the racket" (at 27:54).
He added,
"The tennis schedule is absurd. If you really think about it, and you have guys like Medvedev doing that type of stuff."
During the post-match press conference after his match against Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev said that he "100%" wanted the season to end as soon as possible
"I'm convinced that's why the Aussies have lost their marbles" - Nick Kyrgios on Alex de Minaur playing "all year round"
Apart from talking about Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios also spoke about the Australian players' geographical disadvantage because of long-distance travel from their nation to tournament locations.
He mentioned how De Minaur's hectic schedule and the effect that has on players. Kyrgios also said he couldn't understand how "these guys do it." He said,
"Someone like De Minaur, the dude plays all year round. He's never home like he never comes home. I don't know how he does it, I don't know how these guys do it but I'm convinced that's why the Aussies have lost their marbles there," Nick Kyrgios said. (at 27:42)
Alex de Minaur ended the season with an impressive 47-21 win-loss record, winning two titles and qualifying for the ATP Finals for the first time in his career.
