Caroline Garcia fell one win short of the desired result at the 2023 Monterrey Open on Sunday after suffering a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 defeat at the hands of Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
After the match, runner-up Caroline Garcia reflected on her generally positive week and called the joyous time spent on and off the court in the Mexican city, “inspirational.”
“Runner up in Monterrey @abiertognpseguros This week was an inspirational week on and off court. Really enjoyed every minute of it. Loved the Mexican positives vibes,” the World No. 5 wrote in a post on Instagram.
Later on, however, Caroline Garcia made some vulnerable confessions as she prepared herself to board a flight, presumably to her next stop – Indian Wells. She revealed that she was physically and mentally tired after an arduous week that ended in a loss. The player suggested that the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, and remarked that she was “afraid” to go to sleep.
“Terribly tired, physically and mentally, leaving to the airport in 6h but I can’t fall asleep, I am “afraid” to go to sleep. My mind is going crazy,” Caroline Garcia wrote on Instagram story.
Further detailing her post-loss anxiety, the 29-year-old said that her poor luck and the mistakes and bad decisions she made during the Monterrey Open final against Vekic were haunting her.
“Every time I switch off the lights and put my head on the pillow, I can rewatch my match - that serve catching the lines on break point or that easy forehand missed or that bad choice …” Garcia confessed.
“Tennis can drive you crazy a little bit,” she said.
The Monterrey Open final defeat is Caroline Garcia's second consecutive WTA final defeat
Caroline Garcia maintained a 100% win record in the finals of the WTA tournaments in 2022. The player, who has long been touted to accomplish laurels, re-established herself as a dominant force on tour last year. She bagged four singles titles, including the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati as well as the coveted WTA Finals.
The Frenchwoman’s remarkable results throughout the season reinstated her to a career-best World No. 4 position.
However, Garcia hasn’t had the same streak of fortune in 2023 thus far. The Frenchwoman is yet to lift a single title, despite featuring in two finals – in Lyon (loss to Alycia Parks) and the latest in Monterrey (loss to Donna Vekic).
She also faced defeat in her opening match at the Dubai Tennis Championships. At the Adelaide International 2 and the Qatar Open, Garcia made the quarterfinals and at the 2023 Australian Open, she bowed out in the fourth round.
The French tennis player will now hope for better fortunes at the WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells (March 6-19).
