Frances Tiafoe was born on January 20, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland, to Alphina and Frances Sr. Tiafoe. His parents, immigrants from Sierra Leone, raised him and his twin brother, Franklin, in Maryland. While his father worked as the head of maintenance at the Junior Tennis Champions Center, his mother was a nurse.
Notably, Frances Tiafoe is not the only one blessed with tennis talent in his family. His twin brother, Franklin Tiafoe, is also pursuing a career in the sport. While talking to Baseline back in 2019, Franklin said,
"I want to be known as Franklin Tiafoe, not Frances's brother."
Franklin has played tennis for Salisbury University and has participated in numerous ITF professional tournaments. During their childhood, when their father worked at the Junior Tennis Champions Center, he often took the brothers along. There, they would assist their father by cleaning up the facility, collecting balls, and picking up tennis racquets for the first time, igniting their passion for the sport. Looking back at those days, Franklin said,
"My brother and I would talk about our dreams of playing pro tennis while we fell asleep on those massage tables.
Franklin is frequently seen cheering on his brother from the stands during Frances' professional matches. As Frances prepares to face Taylor Fritz in the semifinals, Franklin will be there to support his twin brother in his quest for a first-ever Grand Slam title.
While tennis has seen many sibling duos, such as the Williams sisters, the Bryans, the McEnroes, the Murrays, and others, the Tiafoes have the potential to become the next great tennis siblings.
Frances Tiafoe makes it to his second US Open semifinal
World No. 20 Frances Tiafoe has captured the attention of tennis fans with his impressive performance at the US Open. Tiafoe is set to face World No. 12 Taylor Fritz in an exciting all-American semifinal match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He advanced to his second US Open semifinal by defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in four sets (3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 1-4).
Fritz, on the other hand, defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev in four sets (7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to book his place in the final four.
Fritz has been playing exceptionally well at Flushing Meadows, losing only two sets throughout the tournament. Tiafoe, however, has dropped five sets, meaning he will need to play his best to defeat Fritz.
