Jannik Sinner rose to the No. 1 position in the men's rankings on Monday (June 9) after his semifinal run at the 2024 French Open. The Italian was congratulated by several legends in a video posted by the official handle of the ATP Tour.
However, some fans slammed the governing body following the release of the video. According to them, the organization is biased towards Sinner, as his rival Carlos Alcaraz's ascent to No. 1 in 2022 was hardly hyped by them.
Jannik Sinner leapfrogged Djokovic to become the top-ranked player on the ATP Tour, as the latter failed to defend his 2023 French Open crown. The Italian was subsequently congratulated by sixteen former World No. 1's, which included past greats of tennis like Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, and John McEnroe.
While most of the tennis community on X (formerly Twitter) was ecstatic at the above gesture, a small section of fans noticed that Carlos Alcaraz's rise to the No. 1 position in 2022 wasn't treated with the same fervour as his top rival's recent feat.
One fan wrote that Alcaraz didn't receive a similar tribute video from the ATP despite becoming the World No. 1 at the bare age of 19 (after winning his maiden Major title at the 2022 US Open).
"But my favorite player, Carlitos, became No. 1 at 19 and I don't remember seeing a montage like this for him. Why not?," one fan wrote.
Another fan, meanwhile, accused the men's tour of being biased. They also tagged the likes of Roger Federer and Andre Agassi in their reply.
"Do all new #1 players get this type of tribute? Or is your bias showing again?," another wrote.
Here are a few more reactions from social media:
"Did these men raise Jannik personally or something? Lmfao how come I don’t remember them doing this for Carlos?" one fan questioned.
"AGAIN you are showing your bias. I have never seen a tribute for the other player who did it? Not even for Alcaraz," another wrote.
"This looks so desperate," another stated.
"This is so whack to me. Are we gonna make one of these every time there's a new No. 1?," yet another wrote.
"Did yall do this for daniil when he became world number 1???? Coz this is soooooo," one Daniil Medvedev fan wrote.
"Shame the number 1 of all number 1s is missing from this video!" another fan wrote, possibly alluding to Djokovic.

Jannik Sinner has won 33 of his 36 matches on the ATP Tour this year. The highlights of his season came during his title-winning runs at the Australian Open, the Miami Masters and the Rotterdam Open in the first three months of 2024.
Sinner has lost to only two players on the pro tour thus far: Carlos Alcaraz (Indian Wells Masters semifinal, French Open semifinal) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Monte-Carlo Masters semifinal).
Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the last four in Paris last week, beating him 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 en route to his third major title. That said, the World No. 1 currently holds an ATP rankings tally of 9,525 points, which is 945 more than the second-best Alcaraz.
