Andy Roddick heaped praises on Taylor Fritz for his brilliant display at the 2024 Laver Cup despite the recent US Open heartbreak. Roddick was impressed with the American No. 1's work ethic and felt that he didn't get enough credit for it.
Fritz became the first person since Andy Roddick in 2009 to reach the final of a Major when he did so at the 2024 US Open. However, despite his best efforts, the American No.1 was outclassed by the World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the summit clash.
Almost two weeks after his heartbreaking loss, the World No. 7 returned to action at the Laver Cup as Team World's top-ranked player. He displayed incredible tennis from the get-go. On the opening day, Fritz teamed up with his compatriot Ben Shelton to defeat Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev and defeated the German again on the second day.
He played Alcaraz in the Laver Cup decider where the Spaniard comfortably clinched a 6-2, 7-5 victory to bring the Laver Cup back to Europe.
In the latest episode of his podcast Served with Andy Roddick, the former World No. 1 was impressed with Taylor Fritz for showing up at the Laver Cup despite his US Open heartbreak. He also commended him for getting a break in the second set despite the Spaniard's domination.
“One other guy I was really impressed with was one Fritz getting back in there after the US Open disappointment, he deserves credit,” Roddick said (at 23:31) “Even fought back from a break down in that second set against Carlos when he was being completely outplayed.”
Roddick felt that Fritz didn't get enough credit and highlighted his incredible work ethic. The 2003 US Open champion also stated that he had a lot of respect for the American No. 1.
“I'm more and more impressed with Fritz. I don't think we give him enough credit, as just, the lunch-pail guy, he shows up every day and does his job. Like you never think of him, having an off-day, giving less than his best effort, playing without a sense of belief, mailing it in. I just have a lot of respect for the way Fritz goes about it.”
