Emma Navarro fell to a shock second-round loss at the ongoing 2025 Brisbane International, one of several tournaments in the buildup to the upcoming Australian Open. Navarro's abject 7-5, 7-5 defeat at the hands of World No. 113 Kimberly Birrell at the WTA 500 event prompted several fans to ridicule the American, who is currently ranked World No. 8 in singles on the WTA Tour rankings.
Navarro was the No. 2 seed in the 2025 Brisbane International women's singles main draw and received a first-round bye. Against home hope Birrell, the American was second-best in almost all departments. Even though the World No. 8 engineered ten break point opportunities, she could only capitalize on four of them. Meanwhile, Birrell converted six of her own ten break-point chances.
It didn't take long for tennis fans to take swipes at Emma Navarro. One blatantly took a shot at her billionaire status, while another opined that the American spends too much time "disliking people", seemingly referring to Navarro's 2024 Paris Olympics feud with eventual women's singles gold medal winner Zheng Qinwen.
"YAAASSS down with the billionaire," a fan said.
"She is too busy disliking people rather than focusing on her tennis," another fan said.
There were some fans who suggested that Navarro didn't put in enough work during the off-season to improve on the weaknesses in her game.
"Looking like these players did nothing off season," one fan said.
"Navarro looked so slow covering the baseline side to side. It’s going to be a problem," another fan said.
Others mocked Navarro within the context of her memorable wins against Coco Gauff at the 2024 editions of the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open.
"Mhmm that’s what Emma gets for kicking Coco out of slams," one fan said.
"She puts all that energy into beating Coco and has nothing for the girls she should easily beat," another fan said.
Navarro's early exit in Brisbane is likely to adversely impact her chances at the 2025 Australian Open. The American made her Melbourne debut last year and produced a couple of impressive displays before eventually being ousted in the third round.
Emma Navarro's Australian Open 2024 journey ended in a 3R loss to Dayana Yastremska
Emma Navarro's Australian Open debut came last year, a first-round clash against Wang Xiyu. The American came out on top with a 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-5 win. After the match, Navarro told ausopen.com:
"My goal from here is play great tennis, obviously, but just really enjoy the moment and enjoy the stage that I'm on and just that I'm here playing in the Australian Open. It's a dream come true for me and my family and my coach as well, so for us to all be here together, and me to be in this position, is really awesome."
Emma Navarro secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win in her second-round matchup facing Elisabetta Cocciaretto. However, in the third round, Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska proved too hot to handle for the American, as she slumped to a 2-6, 6-2, 1-6 loss.
