During the 2023 Geneva Open first-round match on Monday, drama ensued after Adrian Mannarino called his opponent Filip Krajinovic's ball good. However, chair umpire Greg Allensworth overruled the Frenchmen and gave him the point.
The World No. 47 was trying to serve out the match as he was leading 7-5, 5-1. Krajinovic then hit a backhand return very close to the line to tie it at 15-15 in the game.
The line judge called the ball in and so did Mannarino, who checked the mark just to be sure. The chair umpire also had a look and his interpretation was that the ball was out, so he gave the point to Mannarino, making it 30-0 instead.
"So, are you conceding the point then?" Greg Allensworth asked Mannarino, who quickly replied. "I'm not conceding the point. If it's out it's out, I don't care."
Krajinovic wasn't happy about the change, asking the umpire for clarification.
"Doesn't matter, he's winning anyway. Doesn't matter about this match. Then you ask him, what he thinks. If he's decided if it's good or it's not. It's good. Why ask him? You asked him if he says it's in," Krajinovic tried to explain his position.
The umpire then explained to the Serb that if he thinks the ball is out, he has to go with his decision, and Mannarino decided not to concede the point.
The match continued after a short delay. Mannarino won two out of the remaining three points to seal the win and make his way into the second round of the Geneva Open.
