Novak Djokovic was congratulated by tech genius Elon Musk upon his 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal triumph. This was after the Serb defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in two hours and 51 minutes to clinch the elusive gold.
Coming into Paris, the Serb had repeatedly expressed his desire to win gold at the Olympics. He kicked off his campaign by decimating Australia's Matthew Ebden, and followed it up with a statement win against his longtime rival Rafael Nadal in the next round.
Djokovic then had consecutive straight-set wins against Dominik Koepfer, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musseti to reach his maiden Olympic final.
The 37-year-old became the oldest player in the Open Era to reach the final of the prestigious event in men's singles. He defeated 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz to win gold and become the fifth player in the Open Era to complete the career Golden Slam - winning all the Majors and the Olympic gold at least once. With that achievement, he joined the exclusive group of Nadal, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.
Djokovic subsequently took to his social media to pen a heartwarming note for his country Serbia, expressing pride at being able to represent his nation on the highest stage. He also thanked them and stated that his gold medal triumph belonged to every one of his compatriots.
Elon Musk replied to the Serb's tweet to congratulate him on his triumph.
"Congratulations!" Musk wrote.
The World No. 2 responded to Musk by thanking him.
"Thank you 🙏 Elon," the Serb responded.
"This supersedes everything I imagined" - Novak Djokovic calls his Paris Olympics gold the biggest sporting success of his career
While speaking to the media after his win, Novak Djokovic said getting his hands on the gold medal was beyond anything he had ever imagined. He talked about how he failed to clinch an Olympic medal since winning a bronze in his Olympic debut in 2008.
For the Serb, clinching the gold in 2024 is the biggest sporting success of his career.
“This supersedes everything I imagined and hoped I could experience and feel. The fact I won the Bronze in the first Olympics & ever since failed to win a medal… this is probably the biggest sporting success I’ve had in my career,” he said.
Novak Djokovic is slated to compete at the Cincinnati Masters next, where he is the defending champion. Last year he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a three-set thriller that lasted three hours and 49 minutes, making it the longest best-of-three final in ATP history.
