Carlos Alcaraz being asked about Emma Raducanu's presence during the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final has shocked tennis fans. The Spaniard took on Novak Djokovic in a highly anticipated rematch of last year's final on Sunday, July 14.
Raducanu was in attendance for the blockbuster title clash between Alcaraz and Djokovic at the grasscourt Major, witnessing the Spaniard claim an impressive 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) victory to clinch his fourth Grand Slam title and second consecutive crown at SW19.
Emma Raducanu's presence sparked significant interest in the tennis community, with fans joking that Carlos Alcaraz was playing like "prime Roger Federer" simply because the Brit was watching.
"Remember when Carlos Alcaraz saw Emma Raducanu in the crowd and turned into prime Federer?" one fan joked.
"Someone put Raducanu on that court on every match Carlos plays. That was peaking at the highest level all match long," another fan quipped.
The jokes even found their way into the 21-year-old's post-match press conference, as he was asked whether Raducanu had come especially to watch him play.
"[There were] jokes on social media that Carlos is playing like this because Emma Raducanu is watching from the stands. Did she come to see you in particular?" the reporter asked (Translated from Spanish).
Alcaraz gave a measured response, asserting that matches between him and Djokovic always promise an exciting spectacle, attracting large audiences. He also mentioned that it was natural for the Brit to attend the final of her home Slam.
Nevertheless, the four-time Grand Slam champion conceded that he didn't know whether Emma Raducanu had come to see him in particular, disclosing that he would ask her about it directly.
"I don't know. I don't know. I think a lot of people have come to see the final. I think Novak and I always put on a good game, a show on the court. I think it's a very nice game to watch," Carlos Alcaraz said.
"She's from here, I magine she would like to come and see it. Like if there was a Grand Slam in Murcia, I would go see the final 100%, even if I didn't play. I don't know if she's come to see the final, if she's come to see me. Who knows? I'll have to ask her, but I hope she enjoyed the final," he added.
Fans were left in disbelief over Carlos Alcaraz being asked about Emma Raducanu's presence, with one fan humorously declaring that journalism is "dead."
"This is so embarrassing 💀 why are they asking him about emma 😭 worst than tennis twt rn," one fan commented.
"That was soooo 😭 i had to rewatched it to believe," another fan chimed in.
"Journalism is dead 😭," said another.
Fans continued to express their incredulity over the inquiry, criticizing the reporter for the "stupid" question.
"Cringe people asking him stupid question," one fan posted.
"It really be ur own people bc why is it a spanish reporter asking," another fan wrote.
"Seriously?!!! They didn’t have better question to ask?" said yet another.
"I’m sure Emma Raducanu didn’t want to pull out, she had her reasons" - Carlos Alcaraz on the Brit's Wimbledon mixed doubles withdrawal
Emma Raducanu faced backlash after pulling out of mixed doubles at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships shortly before her match with Andy Murray, bringing an unfortunate end to Murray's final campaign at SW19.
However, Carlos Alcaraz empathized with the 21-year-old amid the "difficult situation." The Spaniard expressed his belief that many players would have made the same decision if they were in Raducanu's shoes, dealing with injury concerns ahead of a crucial fourth-round clash in singles.
"It’s a difficult situation. She said she was going to play mixed doubles with Andy in the last Wimbledon of his career. But obviously she's young. I’m sure she didn’t want to pull out of the mixed doubles. She had her reasons to do it," he said in a press conference.
"I guess physical problems. I don’t know, she’s facing the fourth round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon, I think it’s special for her playing in England. I’m sure a lot of players in her position would do the same thing as her. Obviously, knowing it’s his last Wimbledon is difficult to deal with," he added.
Following her mixed doubles withdrawal, Emma Raducanu took on qualifier Lulu Sun in the fourth round of the singles event. Despite the Brit's valiant effort to mount a comeback after losing the first set, Sun eventually claimed a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
